What is Over Your Dead Body About?
Over Your Dead Body is a dark action-comedy thriller about a deeply dysfunctional married couple, Dan (Jason Segel) and Lisa (Samara Weaving), who take a weekend trip to a remote lakeside cabin under the pretense of fixing their relationship, but each secretly plans to murder the other. As their competing schemes unravel, their toxic marriage explodes into violence, only to get even worse when a group of dangerous fugitives also becomes involved. Forced to work together to survive, the couple must navigate betrayal, chaos, and escalating brutality, blurring the line between trying to kill each other and trying to stay alive, ultimately turning their deadly getaway into a twisted fight for both survival and their relationship.
My Personal Thoughts:
I went into Over Your Dead Body expecting a sharp, darkly funny thriller, especially with Jason Segel and Samara Weaving leading it, but it didn’t quite land for me. There are definitely a few moments that hit comedically, but much of the humor missed the mark, leaning more toward awkward than clever. This was ultimately a shame, as I heard nothing but great buzz and hype, with some calling it one of the funniest movies in the last couple of years.
The direction the film takes has flashes of something interesting, but it rushes past its own setup. It doesn’t spend enough time building intrigue or tension before diving into what’s supposed to be the main hook, so the payoff feels undercooked. Instead of a tight, escalating story, it ends up feeling like a series of random, loosely connected moments without a clear sense of direction. Add in a lot of violence and over-the-top moments, and this is the type of film you get. I’m all for great violence and carnage in a psychological thriller, but it needs to merit the setup and purpose first.
The dialogue doesn’t help much either. Some of it comes off pretty corny, which makes it harder to stay immersed. And while I genuinely like both Segel and Weaving, I think Samara Weaving has so much potential to dominate the horror industry for years. With this movie, though, I never fully bought into their relationship here. The chemistry just wasn’t there in a way that made me care about what happened to them.
Some frustrating tropes pop up, like how many times can a character point a shotgun and not actually use it? It quickly goes from suspenseful intrigue to eye-roll-inducing. And to top it off, the ending felt pretty predictable; I could see where it was going from a mile away.
Overall, it’s not without a few entertaining moments, but it falls short of what it could have been given the cast and premise. More buildup, sharper writing, and a clearer direction could have made this a much stronger film.
Movie Stub Review:
So far in 2026, Over Your Dead Body is my most disappointing film of the year. The premise seemed very strong and interesting, and I was completely bought in, but once the film was about 30 minutes in, I could tell it was not going in the direction I hoped. I truly can see the appeal of why some people will love this one and laugh at all of the jokes, but it was a big miss for me.
