Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice Review

Director: BenDavid Grabinski

What Is Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice About?

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is a chaotic sci-fi action comedy that blends crime, romance, and time travel into one wild storyline. The movie follows two small-time criminals, Mike and Nick, whose lives spiral out of control when it’s revealed that Mike is secretly having an affair with Nick’s wife, Alice. Things get even more complicated when a second version of Nick—his future self—suddenly appears after traveling back in time to prevent a deadly mistake.

My Personal Thoughts:

Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice is a surprisingly fun, high-energy ride that works best when you go in knowing as little as possible—seriously, even skipping the posters adds to the experience. At its core, it’s a clever time-traveling survival cat-and-mouse game that keeps you engaged with its many twists and shifting dynamics. Vince Vaughn absolutely stands out, bringing a strong presence that anchors the film, while James Marsden and Eiza González deliver solid performances that round out the cast nicely. All actors played well off of each other, and I was surprised to see James Marsden in this movie, because the last film I think I saw him in was Sex Drive (great film if you have not seen it). The movie also shines stylistically, especially in its editing; the use of black-and-white flashbacks gives the story a fresh visual rhythm and a cool change of pace. Add in a blend of genres, some genuinely exciting action sequences, and creative camera work, and you’ve got a film that’s consistently entertaining in the moment. I do think they should have kept the time travel aspect out of the marketing. I skipped all trailers and was pleasantly surprised when this part of the film revealed itself.

That said, the movie doesn’t quite stick the landing. The comedy, while present, doesn’t hit as hard as you might hope, often feeling more like background flavor than a driving force. The second half is where things noticeably lose steam, with the narrative struggling to maintain the momentum it builds early on, leading to some inconsistent storytelling with what is already a very silly plot. The time travel element, despite being such a central hook, feels underdeveloped. It’s introduced with intrigue, but then largely sidelined instead of being fully explored. Ultimately, this is the kind of movie you’ll enjoy more if you don’t take it too seriously. It delivers plenty of fun along the way, even if it doesn’t fully capitalize on all its ideas.

Movie Stub Rating

Go into this movie looking for a fun, quirky, action set, and you should walk out pretty content. As I previously mentioned, this film does lose some of its way in the middle to the third act, but the action that takes place at the end of the film brings you back in. Overall, this was a solid movie that went straight to Hulu streaming, and I think it’s worth checking out if the overall premise interests you at all.
