Project Hail Mary Review

Director: Phil Lord & Christopher Miller

What Is Project Hail Mary About?

Project Hail Mary is a science fiction story about a lone astronaut, Ryland Grace, who wakes up on a spaceship with no memory of who he is or how he got there. As his memories slowly return, he realizes he’s on a desperate mission to save Earth from a mysterious threat that is causing the sun to lose its energy, putting all life at risk. The movie blends suspense, science, and humor as Grace uses his physics knowledge and problem-solving skills to survive in space and complete his mission. Along the way, he encounters an unexpected ally, and their cooperation becomes key to overcoming enormous challenges. At its core, the story explores resilience, friendship, and the power of human ingenuity in the face of extinction.

My Personal Thoughts:

Project Hail Mary delivers the kind of all-around cinematic experience that’s hard to come by, blending emotion, suspense, comedy, and drama into something that feels both epic and deeply personal. The direction is outstanding, paired with stunning visuals and a perfectly matched score that elevates every moment. At its core, the film thrives on contrast: it explores isolation and loneliness while simultaneously building one of the most unexpected and heartfelt friendships in recent sci-fi. Ryan Gosling as Grace stands out in a performance that carries much of the film, balancing humor and vulnerability in a way that makes the character feel real even in the most extraordinary circumstances. Surprisingly, the movie is also very funny. Most of the jokes land, and the humor feels natural rather than forced, which adds a refreshing layer to what could have been a heavy, purely scientific story.

One of the film’s strongest storytelling choices is its non-linear structure. The narrative constantly shifts between the present—where Grace is actively trying to solve problems and figure out how to save humanity—and the past, gradually revealing how he ended up alone on the mission. This back-and-forth continues well into the third act, keeping the story feeling fresh and engaging as new pieces of the puzzle fall into place. It also invites the audience to think alongside the protagonist, challenging you to piece things together without ever becoming frustrated. While the film does occasionally dive deep into scientific detail, sometimes bordering on overwhelming, it ultimately rewards your attention by making those details feel meaningful and necessary to the story’s progression.

The heart of the movie lies in its unexpected “buddy comedy” dynamic, which becomes the emotional backbone of the film. Without giving anything away, it’s best experienced knowing as little as possible, but it’s this relationship that brings warmth, humor, and genuine connection to the story. The film does an impressive job balancing large-scale ideas about saving humanity with intimate character moments, creating a bond that feels authentic and memorable. It also draws clear inspiration from films like Interstellar, The Martian, and E.T., combining scientific ambition, survival storytelling, and lighthearted charm. While it may feel slightly derivative at times, it never crosses into imitation. Instead, it strikes a balance that feels like a tribute to previous films, all while being its own thing. I’d place it just a notch below Interstellar, which is high praise given that film’s legacy.

If there are any drawbacks, they’re relatively minor. The pacing can drag in a few spots, but the film consistently pulls you back in before it becomes an issue. Similarly, while some influences from other sci-fi classics are noticeable, they don’t detract from the overall experience. The open-ended conclusion is another highlight, offering multiple interpretations and leaving you thinking long after the credits roll.

Movie Stub Rating

With its beautiful sound design, strong performances, and thoughtful storytelling, Project Hail Mary stands out as one of the best films of 2026 so far. It’s a film that can resonate with both sci-fi fans and general audiences alike, offering spectacle, heart, and just enough depth to make it linger. This is a perfect blockbuster film to check out, and one that stands strong as a film that’s meant to be seen in the theatres. Ryan Gosling plays the role perfectly, and the side characters add enough that you get a complete balance of everything you want in a film.
